English Story: An honest wood cutter

​Once upon a time, there lived a poor but extremely honest woodcutter named Rahim in a small village. Every morning, he used to go to the nearby forest to cut wood and sell it in the market to earn a modest living for his family.
​One day, he was cutting wood on a large branch of a tree near a deep river. Suddenly, his axe—his only means of livelihood—slipped from his hands and fell straight into the deep river. The water was very deep and the current was strong. Since Rahim did not know how to swim, he failed to find it. Losing his axe, he sat on the riverbank and began to weep bitterly because he could not afford to buy a new one.
​Hearing his cries, a water fairy took pity on him and emerged from the depths of the river. The fairy asked, “Why are you crying, woodcutter?” Rahim explained his misfortune to her.
​To help him, the fairy dived into the river and came up holding a golden axe. She asked Rahat, “Is this your axe?” Showing complete honesty, Rahim shook his head and replied, “No, this is not my axe.”
​The fairy dived into the water a second time and brought up a silver axe. Once again, Rahat answered with absolute truthfulness, “This is not my axe either.”
​Then, the fairy dived for the third time and brought up Rahim‘s old, ordinary iron axe. Seeing his own familiar tool, Rahim‘s eyes lit up with joy. He exclaimed happily, “Yes, this is my axe!”
​Impressed by his remarkable honesty, the fairy rewarded him by giving him the golden and silver axes along with his own iron axe. Rahim returned home with a joyful heart and lived happily.

​Moral: Honesty is always rewarded, and it brings peace and prosperity to life.

​এক গ্রামে রহিম নামে এক গরিব কিন্তু অত্যন্ত সৎ কাঠুরিয়া বাস করত। সে প্রতিদিন সকালে বনের দিকে যেত এবং কাঠ কেটে বাজারে বিক্রি করে যা পেত, তা দিয়েই কোনোমতে তার সংসার চালাত। ​একদিন সে নদীর ধারে একটি বড় গাছের ডালে বসে কাঠ কাটছিল। হঠাৎ করেই তার হাত থেকে তার একমাত্র উপার্জনের মাধ্যম—লোহার কুঠারটি ফসকে সোজা গভীর নদীতে পড়ে গেল। নদীটি ছিল অনেক গভীর এবং স্রোতও ছিল প্রবল। রহিম সাঁতার জানত না অথবা এই নদীর পানিতে ডুব দিয়ে কুঠার আনা তার পক্ষে অসম্ভব ছিল। তাই সে নদীর পানিতে কুঠারটি খুঁজতে ব্যর্থ হলো। কুঠারটি হারিয়ে সে দিশেহারা হয়ে নদীর তীরে বসে কাঁদতে লাগল, কারণ সেটি কেনার সামর্থ্যও তার ছিল না। ​তার কান্না শুনে নদীর জলপরী তার ওপর দয়া পরবশ হয়ে নদীর গভীর থেকে উঠে এল। পরীটি তাকে বলল, “তুমি কাঁদছ কেন, কাঠুরিয়া?” রহিম তখন তার দুঃখের কথা খুলে বলল। ​পরীমাতা তাকে সাহায্য করার জন্য নদীর পানিতে ডুব দিলেন এবং মুহূর্তের মধ্যে একটি সোনার কুঠার হাতে নিয়ে উঠে এলেন। তিনি রহিমকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, “এটি কি তোমার কুঠার?” রহিম সততার সাথে মাথা নেড়ে বলল, “না, এটি আমার কুঠার নয়।”

​রহিমের এই পরম সততা দেখে পরীটি অত্যন্ত মুগ্ধ হলেন। তিনি তার সততার পুরস্কারস্বরূপ তাকে লোহার কুঠারটির সাথে সোনার কুঠার ও রূপার কুঠার দুটিও উপহার হিসেবে দিয়ে দিলেন। রহিম কুঠার তিনটি নিয়ে অত্যন্ত আনন্দিত মনে বাড়ি ফিরে গেল এবং সুখে দিন কাটাতে লাগল।

Honesty Is the Best Policy

One day, Rahat went to the forest as usual. He was cutting a large branch of a tree near a deep river. Suddenly, his iron axe slipped from his hand and fell into the river. The river was very deep, and its current was very strong. Rahat did not know how to swim, so he could not recover his axe.
The axe was his only tool for earning money. He had no money to buy a new one. Therefore, Rahat became very sad and sat on the riverbank. He began to cry bitterly. He thought about his family and wondered how he would earn money without his axe.
Hearing his cries, a water fairy appeared from the river. She came near Rahat and asked, “Why are you crying, woodcutter?” Rahat respectfully told her the whole story. The fairy felt sorry for him and decided to help him.
She dived into the river and soon came back with a beautiful golden axe. She showed it to Rahat and asked, “Is this your axe?” Rahat looked at it carefully and replied honestly, “No, this is not my axe. My axe is made of iron.”
The fairy dived into the river again. This time, she brought a shining silver axe. She asked, “Is this your axe?” Rahat again shook his head and said, “No, this is not my axe either.”
Then the fairy dived into the river for the third time. She returned with Rahat’s old iron axe. As soon as Rahat saw it, his face became bright with happiness. He said, “Yes! This is my axe. Thank you very much.”
The fairy was highly impressed by Rahat’s honesty. She rewarded him with the golden and silver axes as well as his own iron axe. Rahat was extremely happy. He thanked the fairy and returned home with all three axes. From that day, his life became easier, and he continued to live honestly and peacefully.
Moral: Honesty is always rewarded. An honest person earns respect, peace, and prosperity in life.
