World Tourism Day Celebrated in Gouripur with Calls to Enlist Ancient Relics and Establish a Tourism Hub
| Gouripur, Mymensingh | September 27, 2026
World Tourism Day was celebrated in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh, with a strong call to register the upazila’s ancient historical landmarks under the Department of Archaeology and turn the region into an official tourism center.
To mark the occasion, a rally and discussion meeting were held at 12:30 PM on Sunday (September 27, 2027) in front of the historic Gouripur Zamindar Bari premises—at present housing the Gouripur Women’s College. The event was jointly organized by the Creative Association Historical Society & Library and the ACECC Association, with support from the Creative Association.
As part of the two-day program, an exhibition displaying the area’s historic architecture and a discussion session were held on Saturday (September 26) at 11:00 AM at the Creative Association Historical Society & Library’ meeting room at Dhan Mahal of this town.
Speaking at Sunday’s rally and discussion were Engr. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, President of the Electoral Committee for Birangana Sokhina Silver Pen Award and retired Superintendent of the Government Textile Vocational Institute; Mohammad Raihan Uddin Sarker, General Secretary of the Creative Association Historical Society & Library; Assistant Professor Mosharaf Hossain; Lecturer Md. Anwar Hossain of Gouripur Women’s Degree Honors College; Mir Hossain Miron, a member of the Gouripur Upazila BNP Committee and former Convener of the Upazila Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal; Jahirul Huda Liton, General Secretary of Gouripur Reporters Club; Vice-President Md. Lutfor Rahman Khan Khokon; former President Mohsin Mahmud Shah; prominent social worker Abdul Gafur; journalists Mohammad Saiful Alam, Supak Ranjan Ukil, and Md. Dilip Kumar Das; alongside Shahadat Shah, General Secretary of the ACECC Youth Association, among others.
Speakers highlighted that Gouripur, located in northern Mymensingh, is a historic region deeply tied to the heritage of local kings and Zamindars. The area holds rich archaeological footprints spanning the Mughal, Sultanate, and British eras, including the architectural ruins of 12 Zamindar palaces, ancient mosques, historic water ponds (dighis), temples, medieval shrines (mazars), remnants of two forts, and tombs of legendary historical figures.
Furthermore, speakers noted that Gouripur’s heritage is strongly tied to the epic folklore of Eastern Bengal (Maimansingha Gitika), featuring the tomb and legacy of heroine Birangana Sokhina, as well as the historical fort associated with Mughal-era chieftain Khaja Usman Khan.
They emphasized that with proper preservation and restoration, Gouripur could be transformed into a major historical and tourism destination. To achieve this, speakers demanded a comprehensive official survey to register these ancient sites under the Department of Archaeology, implement conservation efforts, and build necessary tourism infrastructure.
Memorandum Submitted
Following the rally, a formal memorandum addressed to the Director General of the Department of Archaeology under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs was submitted through Gouripur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Afia Amin Pappa.
The memorandum urged immediate governmental action to identify, register, and preserve Gouripur’s ancient and historical landmarks, and to take concrete steps toward establishing the region as a vibrant tourism hub.
Organizers expressed optimism that through state initiatives and community support, Gouripur’s fading history and heritage can be safeguarded and passed on to future generations.
