Historic Mosques of Bangladesh–The Shat Gambuj Mosque

‘Heritage’ is what we inherit from the past, live with in the present and then pass on to our children or future generations. Our unique source of life and inspiration is our cultural and natural heritage. When we speak of ‘World Heritage’, it indicates places and sites that we inherited from the past and pass on to the future generation of the entire world. The ‘Shat Gambuj Mosque’ in Bagerhat is such a heritage. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Originally, the historic Mosque City was known as ‘Khalifatabad’. It is situated at the outskirts of Bagerhat town – not very far from the dense mangrove forest of the Sundarbans. Khalifatabad was a Muslim colony. It was founded by the Turkish general, a saint warrior Ulugh Khan Jahan in the 15^{\text{th}} century. The infrastructure of the city reveals significant technical skills in many mosques as well as early Islamic monuments. Baked bricks were used for the construction of the buildings. The planning of the city was dominated by the tradition of Islamic architecture and the decorations were a combination of Mughal and Turkish architecture. Khan Jahan built a network of roads, bridges, public buildings and reservoirs to make the city habitable. There were about 360 mosques in the city. Among them the most remarkable is the multi-domed Shat Gambuj Mosque. The mosque is unique in the sense that it has 60 pillars that support the roof, with 77 low height domes. The 4 towers at 4 corners have smaller domes at the top as well. The vast prayer hall has 11 arched doorways on the cast and 7 each on the north and south for light and ventilation. It has 7 aisles running along the length of the mosque and 11 deep curves between the slender stone columns. These columns support the curving arches created by the domes. The thickness of the arches is 6 feet and have slightly narrowing hollow and round wall. The west wall in the interior has 11 ‘mihrabs’ (niche in mosque pointing towards Makkah). These mihrabs are decorated with stonework and terracotta. The floor of the mosque is made of brick. Besides being used as a prayer hall, Khan Jahan used the mosque as his court too. Today, it is one of the greatest tourist attractions and one of the best architectural beauties of Bangladesh.

‘ঐতিহ্য’ হলো যা আমরা অতীত থেকে উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে লাভ করি, বর্তমানে যার সাথে বসবাস করি এবং পরবর্তীতে আমাদের সন্তান বা ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের কাছে তা পৌঁছে দিই। আমাদের জীবন ও অনুপ্রেরণার অনন্য উৎস হলো আমাদের সাংস্কৃতিক এবং প্রাকৃতিক ঐতিহ্য। যখন আমরা ‘বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্য’ সম্পর্কে কথা বলি, তা এমন সব স্থান ও ক্ষেত্রকে নির্দেশ করে যা আমরা অতীত থেকে উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে পেয়েছি এবং পুরো বিশ্বের ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের কাছে তা পৌঁছে দিই। বাগেরহাটের ‘ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ’ হলো তেমন একটি ঐতিহ্য। এটি ১৯৮৫ সালে ইউনেস্কো বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্যবাহী স্থান হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি পায়। আদি যুগে ঐতিহাসিক এই মসজিদ শহরটি ‘খলিফাতাবাদ’ নামে পরিচিত ছিল। এটি বাগেরহাট শহরের উপকণ্ঠে—সুন্দরবনের ঘন ম্যানগ্রোভ বনের খুব বেশি দূরে নয়—অবস্থিত। খলিফাতাবাদ ছিল একটি মুসলিম কলোনি। এটি ১৫ শতকে তুর্কি জেনারেল এবং সাধক যোদ্ধা উলুঘ খান জাহান কর্তৃক প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। শহরটির অবকাঠামো অনেক মসজিদে এবং সেই সাথে প্রারম্ভিক ইসলামী স্মারকগুলোতে উল্লেখযোগ্য কারিগরি দক্ষতার পরিচয় দেয়। ভবনগুলোর নির্মাণকাজে পোড় ইটের ব্যবহার করা হয়েছিল। শহরটির পরিকল্পনা ইসলামী স্থাপত্যের ঐতিহ্য দ্বারা প্রভাবিত ছিল এবং এর অলংকরণগুলো ছিল মুঘল ও তুর্কি স্থাপত্যের এক অপূর্ব সংমিশ্রণ। শহরটিকে বসবাসযোগ্য করতে খান জাহান রাস্তা, সেতু, জনবহুল ভবন এবং জলাধারের একটি নেটওয়ার্ক তৈরি করেছিলেন। এই শহরে প্রায় ৩৬০টি মসজিদ ছিল। এর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো বহু-গম্বুজবিশিষ্ট ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ। মসজিদটি অনন্য এই কারণে যে, এর ছাদকে সমর্থন করার জন্য ৬০টি স্তম্ভ এবং ৭৭টি কম উচ্চতার গম্বুজ রয়েছে। এর চার কোণের ৪টি টাওয়ারের উপরেও ছোট গম্বুজ রয়েছে। বিশাল এই প্রার্থনা কক্ষের পূর্বে ১১টি খিলানযুক্ত দরজা এবং আলো-বাতাসের জন্য উত্তর ও দক্ষিণে ৭টি করে দরজা রয়েছে। মসজিদের দৈর্ঘ্য বরাবর ৭টি আইল এবং সরু পাথরের কলামগুলোর মাঝখানে ১১টি গভীর বাঁক রয়েছে। এই কলামগুলো গম্বুজ দ্বারা তৈরি বাঁকা খিলানগুলোকে ধারণ করে আছে। খিলানগুলোর পুরুত্ব ৬ ফুট এবং এর রয়েছে সামান্য সরু ফাঁপা ও গোল দেয়াল। অভ্যন্তরের পশ্চিম দেয়ালে রয়েছে ১১টি ‘মিহরাব’ (মক্কার দিকে নির্দেশকারী মসজিদের কুলুঙ্গি)। এই মিহরাবগুলো পাথরের কাজ ও পোড়ামাটির ফলক দ্বারা অলংকৃত। মসজিদের মেঝে ইট দিয়ে তৈরি। প্রার্থনা কক্ষ হিসেবে ব্যবহার ছাড়াও খান জাহান এই মসজিদটি তাঁর আদালত হিসেবেও ব্যবহার করতেন। বর্তমান সময়ে এটি বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম প্রধান পর্যটন আকর্ষণ এবং শ্রেষ্ঠ স্থাপত্যসৌন্দর্যের একটি।

​English Description:
The Tara Mosque (Star Mosque) is located at Abul Khairat Road in Dhaka. Built in the early 18^{\text{th}} century by Mirza Ghulam Pir—a respectable Zamindar of Dhaka—this historic mosque reflects the traditional Mughal architectural style. It features a total of 5 domes. The exterior decoration is its most distinct feature, showcasing different sizes of stars inlaid on the domes and outside walls using chinaware and white cement. The interior of the mosque is equally charming, boasting a mosaic floor and floral tiles on the walls.

তারা মসজিদ ঢাকার আবুল খায়রাত রোডে অবস্থিত। ঢাকার একজন সম্মানিত জমিদার মির্জা গোলাম পীর ১৮ শতকের শুরুর দিকে এটি নির্মাণ করেন। ঐতিহাসিক এই মসজিদটি ঐতিহ্যবাহী মুঘল স্থাপত্যশৈলী ফুটিয়ে তোলে। এতে মোট ৫টি গম্বুজ রয়েছে। এর বাইরের অংশের অলংকরণ হলো এর সবচেয়ে বৈচিত্র্যময় বৈশিষ্ট্য, যেখানে চিনামাটি এবং সাদা সিমেন্ট ব্যবহার করে গম্বুজ ও বাইরের দেওয়ালে বিভিন্ন আকারের তারা খচিত রয়েছে। মসজিদের অভ্যন্তরভাগও বেশ আকর্ষণীয়, যার রয়েছে একটি মোজাইক করা মেঝে এবং দেওয়ালে ফুলের নকশাযুক্ত টাইলস।
