Subject–Verb Agreement
(কর্তা ও ক্রিয়ার মিল)
Definition: Subject–Verb Agreement means the verb must agree with the subject in number (singular/plural) and person.
বাংলা অর্থ: Subject–Verb Agreement বলতে কর্তা (Subject) ও ক্রিয়া (Verb)-এর মধ্যে সংখ্যা ও পুরুষ অনুযায়ী মিল থাকাকে বোঝায়।
Basic Rules with Examples
- Singular Subject → Singular Verb
Rule: একবচন কর্তার সাথে একবচন ক্রিয়া বসে।
He writes a letter. (সে একটি চিঠি লেখে।)
The boy plays football. (ছেলেটি ফুটবল খেলে।)
- Plural Subject → Plural Verb
Rule: বহুবচন কর্তার সাথে বহুবচন ক্রিয়া বসে।
They write letters. ( তারা চিঠি লেখে।)
The boys play football. ( ছেলেরা ফুটবল খেলে।)
- Two Subjects Joined by “and” → Plural Verb
Rule: “and” দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই বা ততোধিক কর্তার সাথে বহুবচন ক্রিয়া বসে।
Rahim and Karim are friends. ( রহিম ও করিম বন্ধু।)
Tea and coffee are available. ( চা ও কফি পাওয়া যায়।)
- “Either…or / Neither…nor”
Rule: ক্রিয়া নিকটবর্তী কর্তার (nearest subject) সাথে মিলবে।
Either Rahim or his brothers are coming.( রহিম অথবা তার ভাইয়েরা আসছে।)
Neither the boys nor the teacher is present.( ছেলেরা নয়, শিক্ষকও উপস্থিত নন।)
- Collective Noun Usually Takes Singular Verb
Rule: দল বা গোষ্ঠী বোঝালে সাধারণত একবচন ক্রিয়া হয়।
The team is playing well. (দলটি ভালো খেলছে।)
The committee has made a decision. (কমিটি একটি সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে।)
- Each / Every → Singular Verb
Rule: Each, Every-এর পরে একবচন ক্রিয়া বসে।
Each student has a book. (প্রত্যেক ছাত্রের একটি বই আছে।)
Every boy likes games. (প্রত্যেক ছেলে খেলাধুলা পছন্দ করে।)
- Everyone, Somebody, Nobody → Singular Verb
Rule: Indefinite pronoun-এর সাথে একবচন ক্রিয়া বসে।
Everyone is happy. ( সবাই খুশি।)
Nobody knows the answer. (কেউ উত্তরটি জানে না।)
- “One of the” → Singular Verb
Rule: One of the + plural noun + singular verb।
One of the boys is absent. (ছেলেদের মধ্যে একজন অনুপস্থিত।)
One of the books is missing.( বইগুলোর মধ্যে একটি হারিয়ে গেছে।)
- “A number of” vs “The number of”
A number of = Plural Verb
A number of students are absent. (অনেক ছাত্র অনুপস্থিত।)
The number of = Singular Verb
The number of students is increasing. (ছাত্রদের সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে।)
- Uncountable Nouns → Singular Verb
Rule: Information, Advice, Furniture ইত্যাদির সাথে একবচন ক্রিয়া বসে।
The information is correct.( তথ্যটি সঠিক।)
Furniture is expensive. (আসবাবপত্র দামি।)
