Samina is in class 7 and Arif in class 6. They both felt very uncomfortable the other day. It was just the beginning of March and the day was very hot. In the small town of Sherpur, summer had come with all its heat and warmth. Samina and Arif had nothing much to do. While sitting idle on the veranda, they saw their uncle, Anwar coming to them. Anwar works at an NGO called Save the Earth. Samina and Arif started talking to their uncle about weather and climate.

Anwar: Children, why are you sitting idle here? You look very unhappy!
Sabina (Samina): Uncle, it’s so hot all day long.
Arif: And there is no electricity. We can’t use fans.
Samina: We can’t watch television either. Uncle, why is it so hot now?
Anwar: In fact, we’ve an early summer this year. It’s been happening for the last four or five years. Seasons are shifting.
Arif: What’s shifting, Uncle?
Anwar: Summer usually starts from April. But this year it has started in March. This moving from April to March is a shift or change.
Samina: Why do seasons shift, Uncle?
Anwar: Well, it is because of climate change. And many things are happening on this earth due to climate change. For example, seasons are shifting, temperatures are climbing, and sea levels are rising. If things go on like this, our Planet Earth will be in danger.
Samina: Uncle, what will happen if the earth is in danger? How will we survive on this earth?
Anwar: Well… I am going to give you a booklet now. Please read it and you’ll know more about climate change.
Samina & Arif: Thank you, Uncle. We will certainly read it.

A. অনুচ্ছেদ ও কথোপকথনটি পড়ো।
সামিনা সপ্তম শ্রেণিতে এবং আরিফ ষষ্ঠ শ্রেণিতে পড়ে। সেদিন তারা দুজনেই খুব অস্বস্তি বোধ করছিল। তখন মার্চ মাসের মাত্র শুরু, কিন্তু দিনটি ছিল খুবই গরম। শেরপুরের ছোট শহরটিতে গ্রীষ্ম তার সমস্ত উত্তাপ ও উষ্ণতা নিয়ে উপস্থিত হয়েছিল। সামিনা ও আরিফের তেমন কিছু করার ছিল না। বারান্দায় অলস বসে থাকার সময় তারা দেখল তাদের মামা/চাচা আনোয়ার তাদের দিকে আসছেন। আনোয়ার ‘সেভ দ্য আর্থ’ (পৃথিবী রক্ষা করো) নামের একটি এনজিওতে কাজ করেন। সামিনা ও আরিফ তাদের মামার সাথে আবহাওয়া ও জলবায়ু নিয়ে কথা বলতে শুরু করল।
আনোয়ার: ছেলেমেয়েরা, তোমরা এখানে অলস বসে আছো কেন? তোমাদের দেখে খুব বিষণ্ণ লাগছে!
সাবিনা (সামিনা): মামা, সারাদিন খুব গরম।
আরিফ: আর বিদ্যুৎও নেই। আমরা ফ্যান ব্যবহার করতে পারছি না।
সামিনা: আমরা টিভিও দেখতে পারছি না। মামা, এখন এত গরম কেন?
আনোয়ার: আসলে, এ বছর আমাদের দেশে একটু আগেই গ্রীষ্ম চলে এসেছে। গত চার বা পাঁচ বছর ধরে এমনটা ঘটছে। ঋতু পরিবর্তন হচ্ছে (সরে যাচ্ছে)।
আরিফ: সরে যাওয়া বলতে কী বোঝায়, মামা?
আনোয়ার: গ্রীষ্ম সাধারণত এপ্রিল থেকে শুরু হয়। কিন্তু এ বছর তা মার্চ মাসেই শুরু হয়ে গেছে। এপ্রিল থেকে মার্চে এই এগিয়ে আসা বা সরে আসাটাই হলো ‘শিফটিং’ বা পরিবর্তন।
সামিনা: ঋতু কেন সরে যাচ্ছে, মামা?
আনোয়ার: আসলে এটি জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের কারণে হচ্ছে। আর জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের ফলে এই পৃথিবীতে অনেক কিছুই ঘটছে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, ঋতু পরিবর্তন হচ্ছে, তাপমাত্রা বাড়ছে এবং সমুদ্রপৃষ্ঠের উচ্চতা বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। যদি এভাবে চলতে থাকে, তবে আমাদের পৃথিবী গ্রহটি বিপদে পড়বে।
সামিনা: মামা, পৃথিবী বিপদে পড়লে কী হবে? আমরা কীভাবে এই পৃথিবীতে টিকে থাকব?
আনোয়ার: আচ্ছা… আমি তোমাদের একটি ছোট বই (বুকলেট) দিচ্ছি। দয়া করে এটি পড়ো, তাহলে তোমরা জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন সম্পর্কে আরও জানতে পারবে।
সামিনা ও আরিফ: ধন্যবাদ, মামা। আমরা অবশ্যই এটি পড়ব।
