King Midas and the Wise Saint

​Once upon a time, there lived a greedy king named Midas. He loved gold more than anything else in the world. Even though he already had a huge treasure room full of gold, he was never satisfied and always wanted more.
​One day, a wise holy saint came to his palace. The saint was pleased with the king’s hospitality and decided to grant him a special wish. King Midas eagerly said, “I want everything I touch to turn into pure gold.” The saint warned him that this power might not bring him true happiness, but Midas did not listen.
​The next morning, Midas woke up and touched his bed. Instantly, it turned into hard gold. He was thrilled! He ran into his garden and touched flowers, and they turned to gold too.
​Soon, he felt hungry and sat down to eat. But the moment he touched his food and water, they turned into solid gold. He could not eat or drink anything. Suddenly, his beloved daughter ran to him and hugged him. In a second, she turned into a cold, golden statue!
​King Midas cried bitterly. He realized that his greed had ruined his life. He ran to the saint and begged for help. The wise saint took away the golden touch, and his daughter came back to life. Midas learned a great lesson and was never greedy again.

​বাংলা অনুবাদ (Bengali Translation)
​এককালে মিডাস নামে এক লোভী রাজা ছিলেন। তিনি পৃথিবীর অন্য যেকোনো কিছুর চেয়ে সোনা বেশি ভালোবাসতেন। যদিও তাঁর সোনার ভান্ডারে প্রচুর সোনা ছিল, তবুও তিনি সন্তুষ্ট ছিলেন না এবং সবসময় আরও বেশি চাইতেন।
​একদিন এক জ্ঞানী দরবেশ বা সাধু তাঁর রাজপ্রাসাদে এলেন। সাধু রাজার আতিথেয়তায় খুশি হয়ে তাঁকে একটি বিশেষ বর দিতে চাইলেন। রাজা মিডাস খুব আগ্রহের সাথে বললেন, “আমি যা স্পর্শ করব সেটাই যেন খাঁটি সোনা হয়ে যায়।” সাধু তাঁকে সতর্ক করলেন যে এই ক্ষমতা হয়তো তাঁর প্রকৃত সুখ বয়ে আনবে না, কিন্তু মিডাস কথা শুনলেন না।
​পরদিন সকালে মিডাস ঘুম থেকে উঠে তাঁর বিছানা স্পর্শ করলেন। সাথে সাথে এটি শক্ত সোনা হয়ে গেল। তিনি খুব খুশি হলেন! তিনি বাগানে ছুটে গিয়ে ফুলগুলো স্পর্শ করলেন, আর সেগুলোও সোনা হয়ে গেল।
​অল্পসময়ের মধ্যেই তাঁর খিদে পেল এবং তিনি খেতে বসলেন। কিন্তু যেইমাত্র তিনি খাবার ও পানি স্পর্শ করলেন, সেগুলো কঠিন সোনা হয়ে গেল। তিনি কিছুই খেতে বা পান করতে পারলেন না। হঠাৎ তাঁর প্রিয় কন্যা দৌড়ে এসে তাঁকে জড়িয়ে ধরল। এক সেকেন্ডের মধ্যে সে একটি ঠান্ডা সোনার মূর্তিতে পরিণত হলো!
​রাজা মিডাস বিলাপ করে কেঁদে উঠলেন। তিনি বুঝতে পারলেন তাঁর লোভ তাঁর জীবন ধ্বংস করে দিয়েছে। তিনি সাধুর কাছে ছুটে গেলেন এবং সাহায্যের জন্য ভিক্ষা করলেন। জ্ঞানী সাধু সোনার স্পর্শ ফিরিয়ে নিলেন, এবং তাঁর মেয়েও প্রাণ ফিরে পেল। মিডাস একটি বড় শিক্ষা পেলেন এবং আর কখনো লোভ করলেন না।
