Sheikh Saadi’s Dress and Wisdom

​1. Simple Story (For Class 6-7)
​Once, the famous Persian poet Sheikh Saadi was on his way to a royal court. He was wearing very simple and modest clothes. During his journey, he stopped at a wealthy man’s house for overnight shelter. However, seeing his simple attire, the host and other guests mistreated him, thinking he was an ordinary laborer. No one spoke to him much.
​The next morning, Sheikh Saadi left the city. A few days later, he wore a very valuable and gem-studded robe to visit the royal court. On his way, passing by the same wealthy man’s house, the host welcomed him inside with great honor and served him royal food.
​At the dinner table, Sheikh Saadi did something very strange. Instead of eating the food, he began to push the food into the sleeves and pockets of his royal robe. Everyone was surprised and asked for the reason. He calmly said, “I am eating this food to honor this dress. Because you are not entertaining me, but rather this expensive dress of mine as your guest.” That day, everyone understood that a person’s true identity lies in their inner qualities and wisdom, not in their external appearance or clothes.

​2. Detailed Story (At least 30 lines)
​The world-famous poet and philosopher Sheikh Saadi was born in the city of Shiraz, ancient Persia.
​His knowledge, wisdom, and moral stories are highly respected by people all over the world even today.
​Throughout his life, he preferred a simple lifestyle and stayed away from ostentation.
​One day, with the purpose of attending a royal court, he traveled a long distance to reach a city.
​As evening fell, he needed a safe shelter to rest.
​He arrived in front of the magnificent palace of an aristocratic and wealthy man in the city and asked for shelter for the night.
​Although the house owner was extremely wealthy and hospitable, he was fond of external grandeur.
​Since Sheikh Saadi was wearing a very simple and tattered robe at that time, he was mistaken for a common beggar.
​The house owner and the guests present regarded the poet as a minor, poor person and treated him with extreme neglect.
​When dinner was served, no one sat with him, and he was given very simple food.
​Sheikh Saadi accepted the simple meal very calmly without any anger or offense.
​Early the next morning, without informing anyone, he quietly left the mansion and set off for his destination.
​A few days later, the poet was summoned by the royal court to appear with special invitation and great grandeur.
​Considering the royal honor, the poet this time adorned himself with a valuable garment studded with gold and gems.
​By coincidence, he had to enter the city again through the road in front of the same wealthy man’s house.
​Seeing the honorable poet coming in that valuable attire from a distance, the wealthy man recognized him.
​He ran quickly and earnestly requested the poet to enter his house with utmost devotion.
​Responding to his invitation, the poet entered the same house for a short rest.
​The host this time seated the poet with great respect on a very expensive and cushioned seat.
​After cooking, royal dishes like polao, roast, and various items were served in front of the guest.
​But Sheikh Saadi started a strange act instead of eating and surprised everyone.
​He began to take all the delicious food from the plate and push it inside the sleeves of his royal robe.
​He was stuffing the tasty pieces of mutton and polao into the pockets of his expensive cloak one after another.
​The house owner and the guests present started looking at each other’s faces seeing the poet’s strange behavior.
​The host, being curious, could not remain silent and asked humbly, “Hazarat, what are you doing?”
​Sheikh Saadi answered in a very composed and calm voice, “I am doing this for the sake of this dress.”
​”Last time when I came in simple clothes, you did not even show me minimum respect.”
​”Today, as I am wearing this invaluable dress, you are offering me royal respect and hospitality.”
​”This means that you are not honoring my knowledge or qualities, but rather worshipping and entertaining this expensive dress of mine.”
​That day, the arrogant wealthy man realized his mistake and understood that the real identity of a person is not their external dress, but their innate qualities and wisdom.

​3. Stylistic / Metaphorical Story (Modern Literary Style)
​Does the dress measure the person, or does the person glorify the dress? Sheikh Saadi, who lived with the scent of desert winds of the Middle East and the roses of Shiraz, has given the answer to this question through a masterful metaphor.
​One evening, when he knocked on the door of an aristocrat wearing a tattered cloak, his poverty was hidden by the light of the lamp, but it could not hide the narrowness of the human vision. The host covered him with the veil of neglect, mistaking him for an unknown beggar. The food was meager, and the warmth of conversation remained at zero.
​The day changed. The poet was called to the corridor of the royal court. This time, his body was wrapped in a priceless golden cloak. The same road, the same house—but this time, a radical change in perspective. The host laid out a red carpet to welcome him, and the table filled with royal flavors. Saadi Saheb, without taking a single morsel, started putting the food into the pockets of his valuable garment. Everyone stopped. The poet then smiled gently and explained—the entertainment was actually not for the guest, but for his armor-like expensive dress in the guest’s disguise! The world, covered by the illusion of appearance, still bows to external glitter, whereas true beauty lies deep within a person’s talent and intellect.

​১. সাধারণ স্টোরি (Class 6-7 উপযোগী সংক্ষিপ্ত গল্প)
​একদা ইরানের বিখ্যাত কবি শেখ সাদী এক দরবারে যাচ্ছিলেন। তাঁর পরনে ছিল অত্যন্ত সাধারণ ও সাদাসিধে পোশাক। পথিমধ্যে রাতের বেলা তিনি এক ধনকুবেরের বাড়িতে অতিথি হিসেবে আশ্রয় নিলেন। কিন্তু তাঁর সাধারণ পোশাক দেখে বাড়ির লোকজন ও আমন্ত্রিত অতিথিরা তাঁকে সাধারণ খেটে খাওয়া মানুষ ভেবে অবহেলা করল এবং তাঁর সাথে কেউ তেমন কথা বলল না।
​পরদিন সকালে শেখ সাদী শহর থেকে বিদায় নিলেন। কয়েক দিন পর তিনি রাজদরবারে যাওয়ার জন্য অত্যন্ত মূল্যবান ও রত্নখচিত এক পোশাক পরিধান করলেন। পথে আবার ওই একই ধনী ব্যক্তির বাড়ির সামনে দিয়ে যাওয়ার সময় সেই ব্যক্তি তাঁকে সমাদর করে ঘরে তুলল এবং অত্যন্ত সমাদরের সাথে রাজকীয় খাবার পরিবেশন করল।
​খাবারের টেবিলে শেখ সাদী অদ্ভুত এক কান্ড ঘটালেন। তিনি খাবার খাওয়ার বদলে তাঁর রাজকীয় পোশাকের হাতা ও পকেটে খাবার গুঁজে দিতে লাগলেন। বাড়ির সবাই অবাক হয়ে কারণ জিজ্ঞেস করলে তিনি শান্তভাবে বললেন, “আমি যা খাচ্ছি তা তো এই পোশাকেরই সম্মানার্থে খাচ্ছি। কারণ আপনারা তো আমাকে নয়, আমার এই দামি পোশাকটিকেই অতিথি হিসেবে আপ্যায়ন করছেন।” সেদিন সবাই বুঝতে পারল যে মানুষের বাহ্যিক রূপ বা পোশাকের চেয়ে তার প্রকৃত গুণ ও জ্ঞানই হলো আসল পরিচয়।
​২. বড় স্টোরি (কমপক্ষে ৩০ লাইন সম্বলিত বিস্তারিত রূপ)
​১. প্রাচীন ইরানের শিরাজ নগরীতে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন বিশ্ববিখ্যাত কবি ও দার্শনিক শেখ সাদী।
২. তাঁর জ্ঞান, প্রজ্ঞা এবং উপদেশমূলক কাহিনী আজও সারা বিশ্বের মানুষের নিকট অত্যন্ত সমাদৃত।
৩. সারাজীবন তিনি সহজ-সরল জীবনযাপন পছন্দ করতেন এবং আড়ম্বরপূর্ণ জীবন থেকে দূরে থাকতেন।
৪. একদিন এক দরবারে যোগ দেওয়ার উদ্দেশ্যে তিনি দীর্ঘ পথ পাড়ি দিয়ে একটি শহরে এসে পৌঁছলেন।
৫. তখন সন্ধ্যা নেমে আসায় তাঁর বিশ্রামের জন্য একটি নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ের প্রয়োজন হয়ে পড়েছিল।
৬. শহরের এক অভিজাত ও বিত্তশালী ব্যক্তির বিশাল প্রাসাদের সামনে এসে তিনি রাতের মতো আশ্রয় চাইলেন।
৭. বাড়ির মালিক অত্যন্ত ধনাঢ্য হলেও অতিথিপরায়ণ ছিলেন, তবে তিনি বাহ্যিক জৌলুস বেশি পছন্দ করতেন।

১০. রাতের খাবার পরিবেশন করা হলে কেউ তাঁর সাথে বসল না এবং তাঁকে অত্যন্ত সাধারণ খাবার দেওয়া হলো।
১১. শেখ সাদী কোনো প্রকার রাগ বা অভিমান না করে অত্যন্ত শান্তভাবে সেই সাদামাটা খাবার গ্রহণ করলেন।
১২. পরদিন সকালেই তিনি কাউকে কিছু না বলে নীরবে সেই প্রমোদভাণ্ডার ছেড়ে নিজের গন্তব্যের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হলেন।
১৩. কিছুদিন পরে রাজদরবার থেকে কবিকে এক বিশেষ আমন্ত্রণে অত্যন্ত আড়ম্বরপূর্ণভাবে উপস্থিত হতে বলা হলো।
১৪. রাজকীয় সম্মানের কথা বিবেচনা করে কবি এবার তাঁর গায়ে জড়িয়ে নিলেন সোনা ও রত্নখচিত এক মূল্যবান পোশাক।
১৫. কাকতালীয়ভাবে সেই একই ধনী ব্যক্তির বাড়ির সামনের রাস্তা দিয়েই তাঁকে আবার শহরে প্রবেশ করতে হলো।
৬. দূর থেকে মহামান্য কবিকে সেই মূল্যবান পোশাকে আসতে দেখে সেই ধনী ব্যক্তি তাঁকে চিনতে পেরে গেল।
১৭. সে দ্রুত দৌড়ে এসে পরম ভক্তিভরে কবিকে নিজের বাড়িতে প্রবেশ করার জন্য সনিবন্ধ অনুরোধ জানাল।
১৮. কবি তার আমন্ত্রণে সাড়া দিয়ে সেদিনও সেই একই বাড়িতে কিছুক্ষণ জিরিয়ে নেওয়ার জন্য প্রবেশ করলেন।
১৯. গৃহকর্তা এবার কবিকে বসার জন্য অত্যন্ত দামি ও গদিআঁটা আসনে অত্যন্ত সম্মানের সাথে বসালেন।
২০. রান্নাবান্না করিয়ে অতিথির সামনে সুস্বাদু পোলাও, রোস্ট এবং নানা পদের রাজকীয় খাবার পরিবেশন করা হলো।
২১. কিন্তু শেখ সাদী খাবার খাওয়া শুরু না করে অদ্ভুত এক কান্ড ঘটিয়ে সবাইকে তাক লাগিয়ে দিলেন।
২২. তিনি প্লেট থেকে চমৎকার সব খাবার তুলে নিজের রাজকীয় পোশাকের হাতার ভেতরে ঢুকিয়ে দিতে লাগলেন।
২৩. সুস্বাদু খাসির মাংস ও পোলাওয়ের লোকমাগুলো তিনি একের পর এক তাঁর দামি আলখেল্লার পকেটে ভরছিলেন।
২৪. বাড়ির মালিক ও উপস্থিত অতিথিরা কবির এমন অদ্ভুত আচরণ দেখে একে অপরের মুখ চাওয়াচাওয়ি করতে লাগলেন।
২৫. কৌতূহলী হয়ে গৃহকর্তা আর থাকতে না পেরে বিনীতভাবে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, “হযরত, আপনি এ কী করছেন?”
২৬. শেখ সাদী অত্যন্ত ধীরস্থির ও শান্ত কণ্ঠে উত্তর দিলেন, “আমি যা করছি তা তো এই পোশাকেরই খাতিরে করছি।”
২৭. “গতবার যখন আমি সাধারণ পোশাকে এসেছিলাম, তখন আপনারা আমাকে ন্যূনতম সম্মানটুকুও প্রদর্শন করেননি।”
২৮. “আজ এই বহুমূল্যবান পোশাক পরিধান করায় আপনারা আমাকে রাজকীয় সম্মান ও আপ্যায়ন করছেন।”
২৯. “এর অর্থ দাঁড়ায়, আপনারা আমার জ্ঞান বা গুণকে নয়, বরং আমার এই দামি পোশাকটিকেই ভক্তি ও আপ্যায়ন করছেন।”

​পোশাক কি মানুষকে মাপে, নাকি মানুষ পোশাককে মহিমান্বিত করে? মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের বালিয়াড়ির বাতাস আর শিরাজের গোলাপের সুবাস গায়ে মেখে বেঁচে থাকা শেখ সাদী এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিয়ে গেছেন সুনিপুণ এক রূপকে।
​এক সন্ধ্যায় মলিন আলখেল্লা পরে যখন তিনি এক অভিজাতের দরজায় কড়া নাড়লেন, তখন প্রদীপের আলোয় তাঁর দারিদ্র্য ঢাকা পড়েছিল ঠিকই, কিন্তু মানুষের দৃষ্টির সংকীর্ণতা ঢাকতে পারেনি। গৃহকর্তা তাঁকে অচেনা ভিখারি ভেবে অবহেলার চাদরে ঢেকে দিল। খাবার জুটল সামান্য, আর কথার উষ্ণতা রইল শূন্যের কোঠায়।
​দিন বদলে গেল। রাজদরবারের অলিন্দে ডাক পড়ল কবির। এবার তাঁর গায়ে জড়ানো সোনাঝরা বহুমূল্য আলখেল্লা। একই রাস্তা, একই বাড়ি—কিন্তু এবার দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির আমূল পরিবর্তন। গৃহকর্তা লাল গালিচা বিছিয়ে তাঁকে বরণ করে নিল, টেবিল ভরে উঠল রাজকীয় স্বাদে। সাদী সাহেব তখন এক লোকমা মুখে না দিয়ে খাবার তুলে দিলেন তাঁর সেই মূল্যবান পোশাকের পকেটে। থমকে গেল সবাই। কবি তখন মৃদু হেসে বুঝিয়ে দিলেন—আদতে আপ্যায়নটা তো অতিথিকে নয়, অতিথি বেশে তাঁর বর্মসম দামি পোশাকটাকেই করা হয়েছে! রূপের মোহে ঢাকা দুনিয়া আজও বাহ্যিক চাকচিক্যকেই কুর্নিশ জানায়, অথচ আসল সৌন্দর্য তো মানুষের মেধা ও মননের গভীরে লুকিয়ে থাকে।
